Research Faculty - 12 Month Salaried (Open Rank) - Applied Superconductivity Center (NHMFL)
Adjunct / Professor
Department
Applied Superconductivity Center - National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for conducting research in High Temperature Superconducting magnet technology driving the highest possible fields with superconducting magnets, a core mission of the MagLab, as well as important for the fusion industry, particle accelerators, and medical imaging sectors. Duties will include support in our successful Little Big Coil program which recently set a world record DC field of 50 Tesla, including modeling electromechanical properties of conductors and coils, as well as building and testing those coils under extreme operating conditions near or at their failure points.
This position holder will be one of the key personnel for continuing development of our torque magnetometer and other forefront experimental probes, as well as working as a core team member to develop in-field reel-to-reel characterization technology for ReBCO coated conductors.
Additional duties include participation in outreach activities by interacting with the public and explaining various ASC capabilities during tours and open house. Interact with numerous technical visitors from domestic and international laboratories and industries.
The successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to carry out specialized, high level engineering tasks to develop magnets, cryostats, electronic instruments, characterization apparatus (including magnetometers, transport probes and sample holders) and other high field measurement facilities at the ASC.
ASC operates in a very flexible and interactive fashion, and the candidate is expected to work collaboratively with others and to attend and present at regular meetings at which results, strategy and the work of others are constructively discussed.
Qualifications
PhD required in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Engineering or equivalent experiential background with appropriate publication and conference presentation record. We envisage someone with at least three years post-PhD experience in the field.
Must be able to understand instrumentation controls and data acquisition systems, troubleshoot instruments, and a drive to design the best strategy for solving technical issues. As these systems operate in cryogenic environments, sound experience with the operation of cryogenic systems is a requirement.
An understanding of superconducting microstructures, as well as standard light and electron microscopy tools is also expected. The candidate will work closely with various undergraduate and graduate students and positive mentoring skills are expected.
