The Biomedical Technician I is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the installation, inspection, maintenance, calibration, and repair of routine biomedical equipment in accordance with the Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP). Under general supervision, the technician performs basic troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repairs while adhering to established standards adopted by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).

This role provides essential support to clinical operations by ensuring that equipment is safe, functional, and compliant with organizational policies, manufacturer specifications, and regulatory requirements. The Biomedical Technician I is expected to demonstrate customer service, attention to detail, and a commitment to Tampa General Hospital's mission, vision, and values.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and safety checks on biomedical equipment under the guidance of senior technicians and the Medical Equipment Management Plan.
  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and functional verification of biomedical equipment in clinical and back-shop environments.
  • Identify basic equipment malfunctions, perform repairs using appropriate tools and test devices, and return equipment to reliable service or escalate when needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, equipment identifiers, and recommendations for user handling or operational practices.
  • Perform all work in accordance with AAMI standards, manufacturer specifications, and Tampa General Hospital policies to ensure quality and safety.
  • Provide basic instruction to clinicians and staff on proper device use, cleaning needs, warning indicators, and safe handling requirements.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff by identifying risks, addressing equipment safety concerns, and supporting quality improvement initiatives.
  • Follow proper infection control practices and OSHA bloodborne pathogen precautions while working in sterile and non-sterile environments.
  • Work cooperatively with peers, clinical staff, and other departments to support timely service delivery and meet patient care needs.
  • Attend required in-service trainings, continuing education, and skill-development opportunities; demonstrate progress in developing technical and clinical equipment knowledge.

Qualifications

Completion of a 2-year Associate degree, related military training, or academic work aligned with AAMI's Core Competencies for the Biomedical Equipment Technician. No experience required.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of biomedical equipment function, general electromechanical systems, and common clinical devices used in hospital or clinic settings.
  • Ability to perform routine troubleshooting using basic electrical/electronic test instruments; identify simple equipment issues; and perform repairs or escalate appropriately.
  • Knowledge of fundamental patient safety, infection control, grounding, and electrical standards, as well as awareness of local and national regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clinical users, explain basic device functions, and respond to front-line customer service needs professionally and effectively.
  • Demonstrated capability to learn from others on the job, apply new skills, and assist in training interns or new hires in basic tasks.
  • Ability to document work performed, maintain accurate service records, follow established procedures, and manage work assignments with attention to detail.
