The Deckhand for the St.

John's River Ferry service in Jacksonville, Florida monitors the river and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation.

This also handles mooring lines to dock or undock the vessel and transit locks while performing custodial and maintenance tasks as directed, all while providing a high level of customer service to ferry riders.

Please note, this is a day-to-day passenger ferry operation with no rotational assignment.

Thus, there is NO messing and NO berthing included.

Duties & Responsibilities.

Safety and Security.

Monitor river, vessel, and passengers to ensure safety during ferry operation.

Participate in onboard training and routine drills.

Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment (i.

e.

fire extinguishers, life preservers, work vest).

Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Handle and dispose of all chemicals and other types of hazardous or caustic materials in compliance with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) (as required).

Report safety related concerns.

Operations.

Handle mooring lines and rigging to launch or dock the boat.

Assist in boarding and disembarking of passengers.

Perform assigned tasks within legal of USCG and other regulatory agencies.

Assist with training of crew as directed.

Learn toll collecting duties and perform toll collecting as assigned.

Assist with filling water, bunkering fuel, and shore power connect & disconnect, engine room repairs & maintenance as directed.

Responsible for getting underway, mooring, anchoring, handling lines, ship s ramps, and shore side facilities in all weather conditions.

Perform lookout duties while underway - to include watching for other vessels, monitoring traffic conditions and potential unsafe conditions onboard and otherwise.

Perform cleaning tasks of the vessels & property as required.

Perform maintenance and construction tasks as required.

Human Resources (HR).

Understand the Employee Handbook and adhere to policies.

Management Systems.

Understand and comply with the Safety Management System (SMS).

Understand and comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Maintain Crew Qualification binder.

Regulatory Compliance.

Collaborate with other HMS personnel to remain attentive to regulatory and alert to regulatory changes.

Assist Captain in ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.

Assist Captain in ensuring vessel is in an inspection-ready condition at all times.

Client Relations.

Present professional level of customer service and appearance to all clients, both internal and external.

Administration / Financial.

Responsible for handling money and balancing deposits/money bags.

Reporting.

Report number and passenger count to Captain on each departure.

Other Duties.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum & Requirements.

Education: HS Diploma or equivalent.

Professional Certification(s) or License: Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) if applicable, and/or ability to obtain and maintain.

Valid Driver s License.

Copy of DD214, if Veteran status.

Skills & Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Proven track record of working successfully in a team environment.

Ability to work with a sense of urgency and efficiency.

Ability to work in fast-paced, quickly-changing environment.

Ability to process calculations frequently and continuously.

Must be detail-oriented and organized.

Must be willing to accept changes of direction in work and priorities with a positive attitude.

Must be a proactive thinker and constantly think ahead to better serve our customers, both internal and external.

Basic Computer skills; experience with MS Office preferred.

Experience: Minimum 1 year customer service experience.

Two to three years accounting/cashier/retail experience, preferred.

Other: Must be at least 18 years of age.

Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing.

Working Conditions: The majority of work is performed in a Marine environment in outdoor conditions with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions, along with a moderate to loud noise level.

The Marine operation is subject to varied wake and motion.

Physical Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis.

Ability to bend, rotate and reach frequently.

Ability to carry, push/pull and/or lift materials weighing upwards of 75 lbs.

Ascending/descending stairs or ladders safely.

Ability to manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job.

Ability to maneuver through/in/around small and/or confined areas within the vessel; scuttle/hatch area is 18 diameter.

Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic standing balance to complete various duties associated with job.

Must be capable of performing emergency duties as listed in the vessel s station bill.

Vision correctible to 20/40 with full color vision and no night blindness.
